Impossible to Solve Afghanistan Crisis Without Regional Cooperation: Stoltenberg
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has encouraged the Afghan government to work closely with its partners.
Addressing the NATO defense ministers meeting at the Alliance headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, Stoltenberg said, “NATO supports the National Unity Government in Afghanistan. We think it is impossible to solve the crisis in Afghanistan without close cooperation with also the other countries in the region and China is one of them.”
In the meantime, reports suggest that China plans to build a military base in Afghanistan to control militancy.
NATO Secretary-General in response to a question regarding this issue said, “It is not for NATO to decide on whether China is going to have a military base in Afghanistan. That is for Afghanistan to decide. As long as we support and respect the decision of Afghan government, it is up to them to decide.”
Recently, NATO announced to boost its troops’ level from 13,000 to around 16,000 in Afghanistan “to help the Afghans break the stalemate, to send a clear message to Taliban to the insurgents that they will not win on the battleground”.
