For the fifth time in almost a week, at least 30 schoolgirls and female teachers have been poisoned in the western Herat province of Afghanistan today.

Nearly 300 schoolgirls, including teachers have been poisoned allegedly by some type of gas during the last couple of days in Herat.

At least 30 students from Nawin School in the Ingel district of Herat province were taken to the hospital for treatment after being poisoned.

Officials from Herat education directorate say we have engaged a number of ambulances to take students and teachers from Nawin School to the regional hospital for treatment.

Reportedly dozens of students were also poisoned in another school named as Abulolid.

Usually in the past, attacks against schoolgirls were happening by militants who believe girls should not go to schools.

The Taliban eliminated women and girl’s access to education while it ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001.

No specific group has claimed responsibility for the alleged poisoning attacks yet.
