Afghan cricket team set to face India in Super 8 stage at T20 World Cup

Afghanistan is set to kick off the Super 8 stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup against India at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Thursday.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) said the national team arrived in Barbados on Wednesday to prepare for the match.

Afghanistan demonstrated strong form early in the tournament, with wins over Uganda, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea in Group C. However, they faced a setback in their final group match, suffering a significant defeat against co-hosts West Indies by 104 runs.

Rohit Sharma’s squad secured victories over Ireland, Pakistan, and the United States in Group A, while their final match against Canada was called off due to rain.

During a training session in Barbados on Monday, India’s Suryakumar Yadav experienced an injury scare when he was struck on the hand. Despite the incident, Yadav completed practice and is expected to play in the upcoming match.

Afghanistan has a record of three wins and one loss in the tournament so far.

As the competition intensifies, both teams aim to make a strong impact in the Super 8 stage, with India looking to leverage their undefeated streak and Afghanistan seeking to build on their earlier successes.

Afghanistan national cricket team, which has advanced from the group stage to the Super Eight stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup will compete against India, Australia and Bangladesh respectively in the next stage.

The team is in Group 1 of this phase.

The dates and time of their matches are as follow:

20 June: Afghanistan v India, Bridgetown, Barbados – 19:00 Kabul time

22 June: Afghanistan v Australia, Arnos Vale, St Vincent – 05:00 Kabul time

24 June: Afghanistan v Bangladesh, Arnos Vale, St Vincent – 05:00 Kabul time

The Super Eight stage starts Wednesday and is made up of the top eight teams from the group stage.

The teams that progressed are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Australia, India, South Africa, West Indies, England and the USA.

The first Super Eight match on Wednesday sees the US take on South Africa. The second match will be between West Indies and England.

FIFA confirms all 12 groups for 2026 World Cup

The groups and match-ups for the FIFA World Cup 2026, set to be the biggest sporting event in history, were unveiled on Friday during a high-profile Final Draw ceremony held in the United States capital, Washington DC.

In front of nearly 2,000 international guests and millions of viewers worldwide, FIFA revealed the 12 groups of four teams for the expanded 23rd edition of the tournament. The draw marks a major milestone as excitement continues to build across the three host nations — the United States, Canada, and Mexico — and the 16 host cities preparing for the event.

FIFA announced that the full schedule, including match venues and kick-off times for the tournament’s 104 games, will be released during a live global broadcast on Saturday, 6 December.

With nearly two million tickets already sold, FIFA says anticipation for the 2026 World Cup is rapidly rising.

There are 48 teams in next year’s World Cup — an expansion from the 32 teams of previous tournaments.

In the 25th match of the fifth season of the Afghanistan Champions League, Abu Muslim Farah secured a dominant 6-0 victory over Jawanan Perozi.

On Friday, in the 26th match, Istiqlal Kabul defeated Sarsabz Yashlar 3-1.

Tomorrow, in the 27th match, Arman FC will take on Sorkh Poshan Khafi at 10:00 AM, followed by the 28th match, where Sarafan Herat will face Ettifaq Khanzadah at 1:30 PM.
