Afghan Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah vows that no election will take place unless reform is induced in the current electoral system.

“Some Afghans are concerned that former commissioners convicted of fraud may be leading another election, I assure people that electoral reforms is a pre-condition for elections,” Abdullah speaking at the bi-weekly meeting of the council of ministers said.

He assured that the upcoming election will be held under new leadership in commissions.

These statements come after Ahmad Yousuf Nuristani the current chief of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Saturday said to the members of the Afghan Parliament that IEC has set Monday (January 18) as the date to announce vote timeline for the parliamentary and district council elections.

But Afghan leader emphasized that reform in election system is essential and doable and current commission have lost their “rust among Afghans”.

Abdullah says electoral reform is a must for the government and it is one of his commitments with the people and he is committed to make it happen.

After Afghanistan’s 2014 presidential elections and allegations of mass fraud the National Unity Government (NUG) was formed where Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah pledged to introduce and implement reform in the election system.
