A convoy of the Afghan security forces was ambushed by the Taliban militants in the northern province of Sar-e-Pul on Friday morning, leaving at least soldiers killed, local officials said.

The Afghan forces were en route to the provincial capital after finishing a military operation “Walid 38” in Sancharak district of the province when their convoy was targeted by the Taliban militants, a local official said.

According to Sancharak district governor Naqibullah Daqiq, the Taliban suffered heavy casualties in the attack.

At least four Afghan soldiers were also killed in the incident, he added.

Reports suggest a major part of the convoy was still being surrounded by the Taliban.

A member of the Sar–e-Pul provincial council told Ariana News on condition anonymity that the Taliban ambushed the convoy from four directions and that clashes still were underway in the area.

Confirming the attack, the Taliban claimed that three Afghan forces were surrendered to them and that four vehicles, two tanks, and an ambulance were seized in the attack.
