Afghan security forces have retaken the control of Jani Khel district of southeastern Paktia province, officials confirmed Friday.

Provincial police chief, Tooryalay Abdyanee confirmed the seizure, saying Afghan forces launched an operation to reclaim the district last night and the operation was continued over night.

During the operation, governmental forces have cleared the district governor building and its surrounding areas.

According to the official, the forces are continuing their operation to clear overall district.

The news was also confirmed by the Afghan defense ministry spokesman. But a Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, has rejected the recapturing claim in a tweeter post.

The seizure came about ten days after the Taliban militants took control of the district.

Paktia is among the relatively volatile provinces of Afghanistan where the insurgents are active in a number of its areas.
