Afghan Women Being Sexually Abused in Jails: Watchdog

Afghan women being sexually abused in jails, according to Integrity Watch Afghanistan (IWA) new released report.

The IWA report which has examined prisons’ condition in Kabul, Baghlan and Maidan Wardak provinces, cited that some prison staff were sexually exploiting female inmates, and jails turned into places for torture and human rights abuse.  

“The prisons are now turned into torturing place, drugs being sold and bought and even usage of mobile services became a fruitful work for some,” said Sayed Ikram Afzali, the Executive Director of IWA.

The report also noted that most of the terror attacks being planned by the inmates in jails.

Poor state of buildings, lack of fire prevention measures, poor healthcare services are the other issues as the inmates suffer from, according to IWA report.  

“Problems exist in prisons and we make efforts to address the human rights violations and resolve other [relevant] issues,” said Najib Danish, the Acting Spokesman for the Interior Ministry.

The report, meanwhile, noted that some of the inmates were still serving sentence, despite having passed their tariff expiry date due to widespread corruption in the justice and judicial institutions.

Based IWA report’s estimation, there will be roughly 80,000  prisoners in Afghan jails by 2018, unless the level of detention decreases.
