A suicide attack at a game of cricket in southeast Afghanistan has killed nine people and wounded at least 33, a statement released by Ministry of Interior Affairs said.

The attack took place in Khair Kot district in southeastern Paktika province, on the border with Pakistan.

The explosion was caused by a car bomb, the statement said, and probably targeted local government officials watching the match.

A similar attack last year at a volleyball match killed at least 50 people in the same province.

Taliban denied responsibility for the latest attack. The insurgent group rarely claims attacks with a high number of civilian casualties.
