Afghanistan Chief Executive Officer, (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah on Monday’s session of ministerial council strongly emphasized that the reforms will bring in electoral system.

CEO says that efforts have started for holding the parliamentary election and provincial council.

“The National Unity Government (NUG) has a strong determination in brining electoral reforms and we are trying to hold parliamentary election in the nearest time,” said CEO, Abdullah Abdullah.

Abdullah Abdullah called on all Afghan security forces that without any interventions use efforts for providing the security of election process.

This comes as that President Ghani has signed a decree for electoral reforms as his previous decree was rejected by Afghan Parliament.

The rejection of the two presidential decrees on amendment of the electoral laws as well as the law on structure, function and responsibilities of the two election bodies has led to growing uncertainties over the electoral reforms process which was set to result in a reformed electoral system in Afghanistan.

The current legal stalemate over the electoral reforms is coming along with many other shortcomings and limitations to the country’s crucial reforms process. The stalemate is going to further put into uncertainty the prospect of the upcoming parliamentary and provincial councils’ elections.

President Ghani and Chief Executive Officer Abdullah, in the September 2014 agreement, agreed to electoral reforms “to ensure that future elections are credible.” The details of these reforms, when they should take place and who should design them are, however, proving contentious.
