Clashes erupted between Pakistani and Afghan forces on Friday along their disputed Chaman border, killing and injuring dozens on both sides, officials said.

The clashes began when the Pakistani military were guarding a census team and building wire fence in Luqman village of Speen Boldak district of southern Kandahar province, the Provincial Police Chief, General Abdul Raziq said.

Raziq accused the Pakistani militia forces of initiating the gun-battle in Luqman – a remote village that falls in the zero point area of the border between the two countries.

Raziq said the clashes killed three Afghan border forces and three civilians, adding that dozens more wounded in the incident.

On the other side reports suggest, nine Pakistani militia forces were killed and 40 more injured.

Followed hours-long clashes, Pakistan’s foreign ministry summoned Afghanistan’s charge d’affaires in Islamabad to protest, calling the firing “unprovoked”. The country; meanwhile, closed Chaman crossing – one of the two main crossing points on the border with Afghanistan.
