An explosion that destroyed a car and killed the driver in downtown Berlin during rush hour traffic Tuesday was likely caused by a bomb, police said.

Carsten Mueller, the deputy chief spokesman for Berlin police said the explosion happened at about 8 a.m. local time in the western district of Charlottenburg.

Berlin police sealed off the area. Bomb experts were also on the scene investigating whether there were any further explosives and officers told residents in the area to stay indoors and keep their windows shut.

Bomb disposal teams later said there was no risk of more explosions.

A picture posted by the force showed the wreckage of a silver Volkswagen Passat estate on the street with its windows blown out and its front end smashed in.

Eyewitnesses  said that the driver initially managed to escape from the car but then collapsed due to his severe injuries. Attempts on the part of emergency services to resuscitate him proved futile.

Police told residents in the area to close their windows and stay in the back of their apartments.
