Farah Governor Resigns Following Residents Protest

Following violent protests, the governor of western Farah province resigned from his position on Thursday.

Speaking at a press conference, the provincial governor, Mohammad Arif Shah Jahan, said he is stepping down in order to maintain unity among Farah residents.

On Wednesday, hundreds of angry residents staged a protest over the increased insecurity in the province and chanted resignation of the provincial governor and police chief.

Several people killed or injured as the protest turned violent during the demonstration outside the governor’s building.

Farah’s security situation is deteriorating as Taliban insurgents continue to seize check posts.

Residents worry that the battle will reach Farah city soon if the situation does not come under control.

On Sunday, Gulbahar Mujahid, provincial deputy police chief was killed in a roadside mine blast when he was on his way to help security forces in Sayedabad village of Pushtroad district.
