Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani has called on United Nations institutions to make their working system transparent and eliminate duplicate programs.

Ghani stressed on beginning of a survey on projects of government and non government organization; adding the process of UN recruitment for Afghans must be faster.

In a meeting with representatives of world’s organization, especially the United Nations, President Ghani reviewed the activities of UN institutions.

President called reforms in state institutions as imperative and said that chairing the meetings of National Procurement Commission, he personally oversees the activities of this commission, and takes decisive measures to prevent corruption and ensure transparency in all government contracts.

He also urged the UN to give priority to Afghans in transfer of responsibilities and expertise and review the practices of its services in Afghanistan.

The UN’s role in the country includes an election operation that is working with Afghan authorities to register voters and organize elections for 2009 and 2010.

Other efforts include promoting of good governance and the rule of law, training of police, and the like. But in a land torn by violence, warlordism, drug production and intense suspicion of foreigners, these programs seem unreal and very unlikely to succeed.

Until Afghanistan achieves a lasting and stable peace designed and supported by Afghanis, there can be no prospect of progress, electoral or otherwise.
