President Ashraf Ghani in his meeting with European Union (EU) special representative at EU conference in Presidential Palce has said that corruption is a national stigma and should be restrained.

“The factors of corruption have been detected, but the things that increases corruption have not been identified yet. We all accept the existence of corruption in the country, so we should begin seriously fighting against it,” President Ghani said.

President Ghani has made big promises to crack down on corruption  in the past.

The European Union has said to consider the existence of corruption in the country one of the serious challenges; citing the European Union is seriously working on solution for combating against this phenomenon.

” Afghans are affected due to the existence of corruption every day and a global cooperation is needed for fighting against this phenomenon,” Franz Michael. MELLBIN, EU special envoy said.

The new government has both a practical and philosophical challenge to reduce corruption. At the moment people do not believe that the government can fight corruption so they accept that it will remain. If the government took practical, well-publicized steps to tackle it, perceptions would begin to change.

Afghanistan faces numerous daunting governance challenges which need to be addressed if long term stability in the country is to be achieved.

But alongside larger-scale changes, immediate steps can and must be taken to curb the devastation caused by corruption.
