Hekmatyar Urges ‘Fundamental Changes’ in Security Institutions

Hezb-e-Islami leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar says in order to overcome on the ongoing crisis in the country fundamental changes should be brought into the security institutions.

Addressing a gathering on Wednesday, Hekmatyar criticized the government over recent sharp rise in violence in the country, urging soon end to the ongoing conflict.

Hekmatyar asserted that NATO supports those individuals in Afghanistan who had been engaged in fight against Afghan people during Soviet Union era.

“The ongoing conflict is the continuation of that war which was imposed by Soviet Union on Afghanistan and now it is being a heritage for NATO,” he said.

To overcome on these challenges, reform should be brought into the security institutions, he stressed. “It should be freed of those who seek their interest in war and insecurity.”

The Hezb-e-Islami leader, meanwhile, said that efforts are underway by certain figures to delay the next year’s district councils and parliamentary elections, warning that the elections must be held upon the scheduled timetable with no interference of “foreigners”.

“Foreigners should not interfere in the elections, they can oversee [the process],” he said. “It is shameful for us that foreigners manage the process.”

He also called on the Taliban to end fighting in order to reach for its “legitimate” demands.
