Iran Tries to Halt Construction of Bakhshabad Dam in Farah: Local Officials

Iran is attempting to halt construction of Bakhshabad water dam in western Farah province of Afghanistan, local officials said Sunday.

The Provincial Deputy Governor, Mohammad Yunus Rasooli said that Iran recently trying to prevent the dam from being constructed by supplying the insurgent groups mainly, the Taliban in the neighboring province.

“[Iran] is funding them [the insurgents], providing them heavy weapons,” Rasooli said.

The Deputy Governor stressed that Iran is also paving the way for interference of Russia in the province. However, Iran has denied the claims in the past.

Meanwhile, local civil society activists claimed the militants group being supplied by  Iran and other countries in the region.

“Hundreds of weapons and ammunition being provided by the neighboring countries that have dual policy toward us,” said Spokesman of local civil society, Hamidullah Rahmani.
