The leader of the Islamic State’s branch in Afghanistan, Abu Sayed, was killed by a drone strike this week,  the U.S. military in Afghanistan confirmed Friday.

The strike targeted the IS insurgents headquarters in northeastern Kunar  province of Afghanistan on  Tuesday, July 11.

“U.S. Forces-Afghanistan confirms that Abu Sayed, the Emir of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria – Khorasan Province (ISIS-K) in Afghanistan was killed in a strike on the group’s headquarters in Kunar Province on July 11,” the U.S. forces commander in Afghanistan, General John Nicholson said in a statement.

“This operation is another success in our campaign to defeat ISIS-K in Afghanistan in 2017,” said Nicholson. “Abu Sayed is the third ISIS-K emir we have killed in the last year and we will continue until they are annihilated. There is no safe haven for ISIS-K in Afghanistan,” he added.

Abe Sayed was chosen to lead the group in Afghanistan after his predecessor, Abdul Hasib, was killed in April during a special forces raid in eastern Nangarhar province, where the group has been active.
