Islamic State Is Recruiting In Kunar: Provincial Governor
The governor of Afghanistan’s northeastern Kunar province on Friday expressed concerns over the Islamic State (IS) group recruitment process in the province.
“Daesh [the Arabic acronym for the IS group] has launched recruiting people in Kunar province,” said Kunar governor Wahidullah Kalimzay,” but they haven’t been in action yet.”
He said that no “huge operation” has been conducted in the province yet to target the IS militants.
The Afghan defense ministry rejected the provincial governor’s statement, saying Abu Sayed, the third leader of ISIS-K in Afghanistan, was killed in Kunar province.
Sayed was killed in a U.S. airstrike on the group’s headquarters in Kunar on July 11.
“Daesh is strongly trying to increase its militants in Achin and Shinwari districts of Nangarhar as well as in some areas in Kunar and Nuristan provinces,” said lawmaker Hazrat Ali.
During the last one week, the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for two attacks in Kabul and Herat that left dozens of people death and injured.
