Kabul Residents Face Power Outage Due to Conflict in Kunduz

The over-week long conflict in northern Kunduz city has caused serious damages to important electricity power lines imported from Tajikistan and lead into power outage in capital Kabul.

A number of Kabul residents have complained about the power blackout in the city and asked the relevant institutions to ensure safety of the power lines and find lasting solution for the issue.   

“The recent power blackout has caused lot of problems, the government should maintain security of the routes where the power lines passing through,” A resident of Kabul, Zamir said.

 However, the Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) officials said work is underway to repair the damaged power lines.

“At the moment work is underway for repairing the two power circuits and the area is under control of the security forces, till night all of Kabul will have electricity,” said DABS Spokesman, Wahidullah Tawhidi.

Afghanistan depends heavily on electricity imports from its neighbors as it imports 70 percent of the electricity from Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Iran.

This is not the first time that the capital faces electricity blackout due to conflict in north. Over year ago, the Taliban militants cut major power lines in northern Baghlan province that caused weeks-long power outage in Kabul.
