A delegation from the European Union, led by Sarah Rinaldi, met with Khalil Rahman Haqqani, acting minister of refugees and repatriation, on Wednesday and pledged 4.5 million Euros in assistance for Herat earthquake victims, and signed a memorandum of understanding for 15 million Euros to help return refugees, the ministry said in a statement.

Quoting Rinaldi, the ministry said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that the EU “will never leave Afghans alone.”

Acting refugees minister meanwhile expressed his gratitude for the cooperation of the EU but said while aid was coming in, the results were not “visible”.

He stated that most of the funding coming into the country is wasted on unnecessary expenses such as administration costs.

Aid received should be used to provide shelters for returnees, clinics, schools and other basic and infrastructure projects in order to change people’s living conditions, Haqqani told Rinaldi.
