Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) has launched $5 million carpet weaving project for placement of Afghan returnees with cooperation of World Bank.

The project will provide employment opportunities for Afghans returning from Pakistan and Iran. Since last year more than 1.5 million Afghan refugees return to their homeland, most of them in need of assistance.

In order to cope with challenges of Afghan returnees, MRRD has initiated the carpet project with cooperation of World Bank.

“We have signed an agreement with World Bank, problems will be solved very soon and employment opportunities will be provided for the people,” said MRRD Spokesman, Akbar Rustami.

Economic analysts; however, believe the problems of returnees will not be solved unless the government welcome them with job opportunities.

“One of the reasons for ongoing challenges in the country is high unemployment rate and large part of the issues will be solved by job creation, these projects could be significant in reducing unemployment rate,” said an economic analyst, Sayed Qias Sayedi.
