New York Truck Attack Kills 8 As Driver Shouts ‘Allahu Akbar’
Five friends from Argentina celebrating the 30th anniversary of their high school graduation were among those killed in the attack.
The suspect was identified by two law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation as Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov. He’s from Uzbekistan in Central Asia but had been living in the US since 2010, sources said.
US media, citing police sources, said that Saipov left a note in the truck claiming he committed the attack on behalf of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
US President Donald Trump has called the incident a “terrorist attack.” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said there’s no evidence to suggest a wider threat or plot.
