On Monday session Minister’s Council ratified trial distribution of electronic identity cards to be started on August 19.

“Fortunately, I have to say that in a historical decision minister’s council announced August 19 as the date for issuing electronic ID cards,” Mujib Ul Rahman Rahimi, Chief Executive Office spokesman said.

Afghan government official says according to the law the word ‘Afghan’ will not be mentioned in the new electronic ID cards.

“As Afghan parliament has already approved the law, the word Afghan will not be used on the ID cards,” he added.

Afghanistan ministry of interior has a plan to distribute more than 369,000 IDs during the first 90 days.

Distribution of electronic identification cards was one of the promises which were made by the national unity government leaders during the 2014 Presidential election campaigns.
