The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has strongly condemned the attack carried out at a political gathering in the Afghan capital, Kabul in which at least 11 people were killed and 95 more wounded.

At the gathering, prominent Afghan politicians including former President Hamid Karzai and current top government heads were present when it came under attack.

The attack took place in Dashte Barchi area, west of Kabul City where the politicians had gathered to commemorate the assassination of an ethnic Hazara leader who was killed more than two decades ago by the Taliban.

The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the attack.  Interior Affairs Ministry, however, said that the Taliban was involved behind the incident.

“The OIC Secretary General Dr. Yousef A. Al-Othaimeen reiterated OIC’s unwavering solidarity with Afghanistan, and commended the resilience, resolve and perseverance of the Afghan people for peace, security, and stability of their country,” OIC said in a statement.

He conveyed his sincere condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the Afghan government and wished for speedy recovery of the wounded.

The Secretary-General reiterated the principled position of the OIC against all forms of terrorism and extremism.
