OIC holds emergency meeting on Afghanistan

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held an emergency meeting over the situation in Afghanistan on Sunday, calling on the international community to provide humanitarian aid.

Initiated by Saudi Arabia, where the group’s headquarters is based, the meeting called for all factions in Afghanistan to reach consensus at an early date to establish an inclusive Islamic government, Reuters reported.

The OIC attaches great concern to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Afghanistan contributed by the current situation, the pandemic and drought, and called for its member states, partners and financial institutions to provide timely humanitarian support, according to a closing statement of the meeting, Reuters reported.

According to a statement issued by the OIC, member states will continue to support Afghanistan in realizing peace, security, stability and development.

The organization stressed that the international community should provide as much assistance as possible without interfering in the internal affairs of Afghanistan.

The meeting also announced that a delegation of the OIC will visit the Afghan capital of Kabul to convey the OIC’s message of supporting peace and reconciliation and coordinate all parties to work together to ensure the fundamental rights of the Afghan people.
