Operations underway to rescue abducted Zabul bus passengers

Afghanistan defense ministry declined to comment about the details of Afghan security forces military operations in Zabul but emphasized that operations are underway in areas believed the abductees hided.

The ministry of defense assured that Afghan troops will not return back until the 31 abductees not released.

“Efforts are ongoing for releasing the 31 passengers and Afghan security forces will not return back to their headquarters until the abductees not released.” Dawlat Waziri, spokesman of defense ministry said.

Afghan troops launched military operations on Tuesday in Zabul province for releasing 31 Zabul bus passengers.

More than a week ago, unidentified gunmen in southern Afghanistan, Shah joy district of Zabul province stopped two buses traveling to the capital, Kabul, and abducted 31 people belonging to the ethnic Hazara minority.

The identity of the abductors has been reported as Taliban or Daesh group that all wore black clothing and black masks; however no group have claimed responsibility for the abduction.

Abduction of the passengers has raised concerns among those who travel through Kabul-Kandahar Highway. A number of passengers said the highway was not safe to travel following the incident. They urged the government to not only release the abducted passengers but also beef up security at the highway.
