Sharbat Gula, the iconic Afghan women who was arrested on Wednesday in Pakistan on fraud charges will be freed on bail.

She is accused of procuring fake identity papers.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said at a press conference,” I think I will have to review this case because she is a woman and we should see it from a humanitarian angle”.

Khan said the country’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) should arrange bail as soon as possible.

However, he added: “But if we withdraw charges against her, deport her or give her a temporary visa to leave Pakistan, then we will have to take back cases against the officials who issued her fake ID card, they are real culprits and I do not want to let them off the hook in any manner”.

The green-eyed woman was arrested after investigators launched a probe into her application shortly after she procured an identity card. Sharbat Gula had applied for a Pakistani identity card in Peshawar in April 2014 under the name Sharbat Bibi. The photograph she had provided featured the same piercing green eyes seen in Steve McCurry’s famous image.

Sharbat Gula’s famous photograph was taken in a Pakistan refugee camp by photographer Steve McCurry in the 1980s. It had gone on to become the most famous cover image in the magazine’s history.
