Ghani Signs Decree Ordering Distribution of e-ID Cards

President Ashraf Ghani has ordered the distribution of electronic identification cards, Press office of the second Vice President announced on Monday.

A statement released by the office of the second Vice President said, President Ghani officially signed a decree on May 13, ordering the distribution of electronic ID cards and monitoring of this national process.

The decree was issued to accelerate the stalled process, the statement added.

The population registration department is responsible for the implementation of the process while the ministries of interior, communication and information technology, and finance are tasked to provide the equipment and facilities for the process.

According to the statement, the financial and executive section of the population registration department will be monitored and executed by a well-known international organization.

The operational plan for the first phase of the distribution process must be executed in a period of three months after the decree signed, the decree clarifies.

The decree also orders all governmental institutions to provide overall cooperation in getting the process underway, while the order also obliges the population registration department to report to the administrative office of the President and the finance ministry about the developments in the process.

The process will be monitored by the Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah and Second Vice President Sarwar Danish.
