National Unity Government (NUG) leaders have welcomed a decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to renew America’s engagement in the war-torn country and allow for the deployment of more troops.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said in a statement that the announcement showed the “enduring commitment by Afghanistan’s foundation partner in this global conflict”.

“I am grateful to President Trump and the American people for this affirmation of support for our efforts to achieve self reliance and for our joint struggle to rid the region from the threat of terrorism,” he said.

President emphasized on good points of the new strategy which increases capacity in the Resolute Support Mission, puts particular emphasis on enhancing Afghan air power, doubling the size of the Afghan Special Forces, and deepening NATO’s ability to train, advice and assist Afghan National Defense and security forces.

“The U.S. partnership is stronger than ever in overcoming the threat of terrorism that threatens us all. The strength of our security forces should show the Taliban and others that they cannot win a military victory. The objective of peace is paramount. Peace remains our priority,” he added.

On its part, Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah also welcomed the U.S. new strategy for Afghanistan. Considering it an opportunity for counter terrorism talks with regional countries.

“Once again we prepare to announce talks and negotiation with the Taliban. It is an opportunity for the group which thinks about achieving victory militarily,” Abdullah added.
