Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called the new U.S. strategy for Afghanistan “regrettable” and a “futile course”.

Speaking at a press conference in Moscow on Thursday, lavrov said,” [we] regret that the main focus of the new strategy announced by Washington is regulation by methods of force.”

“We are certain this is a futile course,” Lovrov added.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced his strategy for Afghanistan on Tuesday, vowing to win the Afghanistan war. He warned Pakistan for providing “safe havens to agents of chaos and terror”.

Pakistan reacted at Trump’s remarks and claimed that Islamabad itself has suffered from terrorism.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Khwaja Asif had said that “Scapegoating Pakistan won’t stabilize Afghanistan”.

Afghan political commentators say the neighboring countries react to new U.S. policy because they see their interest in danger.

“It was expected that regional countries including Russia, China and Pakistan will react to Washington’s new strategy on Afghan war,” Afghan political analyst Abbas Farasoo told Ariana News.
