Suggestion of engaging with IEA a slap in the face of Afghans: McCaul
Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee of Congress, has said the suggestion that there is any possibility for engagement with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) is a slap in the face of the Afghan people.
McCaul said this in response to US Charge d’Affaires Karen Decker’s statement about engaging with the IEA.
Decker had said on Friday that there was strong support among civil society representatives in Istanbul for the UN-led process to reintegrate Afghanistan into the international community.
“Lots of talent and energy here ready to support a political roadmap and engagement with the Taliban (IEA). Afghanistan needs all its people to thrive,” she added on X.
McCaul was quoted by the House of Foreign Affairs Committee on X as saying: “The suggestion that there is any possibility for engagement with the Taliban (IEA) is a slap in the face to the people of Afghanistan who are victims of the Taliban (IEA) regime. This administration should not encourage engagement with the Taliban (IEA) under any circumstances.”
The IEA has not yet commented about these remarks but continues to say they want good relations with the international community.
Ministry of Information and Culture of Afghanistan says the National Archives digitized hundreds of historical documents, manuscripts and books during the 1404 solar year as part of efforts to preserve the country’s cultural and historical heritage.
According to the ministry, the National Archives digitized 741 books, 232 manuscripts, 358 decrees and one genealogy document over the past year.
The ministry also said that 830 books, 60 manuscripts and four decrees were restored and rebound during the same period.
In addition, 32 new manuscripts were handed over to the National Archives, further enriching the country’s collection of historical records.
Afghan officials have repeatedly stressed the importance of preserving historical documents and manuscripts, many of which date back several centuries and reflect the country’s rich cultural legacy.
Two people have been killed amid protests against a poppy eradication campaign in northeastern Badakhshan province, local officials said.
Authorities said counter-narcotics forces were deployed on Friday to Atan Jalo area of Argo district to destroy poppy fields. Clashes erupted after a number of farmers and residents reportedly attempted to block the operation.
Officials said a child was killed during Friday’s unrest, while another person died on Saturday as protests and tensions continued in the area.
According to local authorities, demonstrators also temporarily blocked the Kishm–Faizabad highway, disrupting traffic for several hours before it was reopened following coordinated efforts by security officials, religious scholars, and community elders.
Officials blamed “drug traffickers and criminal groups” for inciting the unrest and said security forces have since regained control of the area.
A high-ranking Uzbek delegation comprising government officials and private sector representatives from the Republic of Karakalpakstan arrived in Kabul on Saturday to discuss the expansion of trade and economic cooperation with Afghanistan.
The delegation is headed by Amanbay Orinbayev, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Karakalpakstan.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the delegation is expected to hold talks with Nooruddin Azizi, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, focusing on strengthening bilateral trade and economic relations.
The ministry said the visiting delegation will also participate in trade connectivity meetings and business-to-business sessions aimed at enhancing commercial cooperation between the two sides.
As part of the visit, the Uzbek delegation is also scheduled to travel to Balkh province, where members will attend additional trade meetings and inaugurate an exhibition showcasing Uzbekistan’s domestic products.
