The NATO-led Resolute Support Mission confirmed that a suicide bomber attacked a NATO convoy near the airport of southern Kandahar Province on Wednesday.

“Resolute Support can confirm a NATO convoy was attacked this afternoon in Kandahar. The attack did cause casualties,” a Resolute Support statement said.

Initially, Afghan local officials reported that the convoy belonged to the Afghan security forces.

The attack occurred near a military camp and the suicide bomber detonated his explosives shortly after the NATO convoy left the camp.

“We are working to gather additional information as quickly as possible and will release more details as appropriate,” the statement added.

Insurgent violence in Afghanistan is running at its highest level since U.S. forces invaded the country in 2001 to oust the Taliban.

Most of the violence is concentrated in southern or eastern Afghanistan, where insurgents have staged several attacks. But there have been occasional suicide attacks on Afghan security forces or western targets in Kabul.
