The top commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan said on Thursday that with the new U.S. strategy, the Taliban “cannot win on the battlefield” and it is time for them to join the peace process.

General John Nicholson was speaking at a press conference in Kabul with U.S. ambassador Hugo Llorens regarding the America’s new strategy for Afghanistan.

“We will not fail in Afghanistan,” Nicholson said,” our national security depends on that as well.”

He praised Trump’s new decision, adding it is “proof of our continued commitment” for Afghanistan.

In addition, the top U.S. military commander promised Afghans to stand with their security forces against “terrorists and the enemies of Afghanistan”.

Nicholson called the Taliban as “a criminal organization” which is more interested in profits from drugs, kidnapping and murder for hire.

He also said that the group have a simple choice to stop fighting and killing innocent civilians and join the peace process.

This comes as President Trump has vowed to prevail over Taliban on the Afghanistan battlefield.
