Taliban has confirmed the death of Mullah Akhtar Mansour in a U.S. drone strike and appointed a new leader.

In a statement released by the group on Wednesday, the Taliban said its new leader is Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada, one of two Mansour’s deputies.

According to the announcement Mansour successor was chosen at a meeting of Taliban leaders, which was believed to have been held in Pakistan where Sirajuddin Haqqani and Mullah Omar’s son Mullah Yaqoob have been appointed as deputies of Akhundzada.

The insurgent group leadership council based in Pakistani cities vows that their Jihad will continue until the day of judgment and urges all its militants not to worry.

Mansour was killed in Pakistan on Saturday when his vehicle was struck by a U.S. drone, believed to be the first time a Taliban leader was killed in such a way inside Pakistani territory.

Pakistani authorities are believed to support Taliban leaders in cities over the Afghan border. The insurgents have been fighting to overthrow the Kabul government since 2001.
