Three American soldiers were killed and one wounded on Saturday when an Afghan commando soldier believed to be a Taliban infiltrator opened fire on them in Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

According to officials the shooting has occurred in the Achin district of Nangarhar province.

Provincial governor spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani, has confirmed the attack, adding the Afghan soldier was killed in the incident.

A Pentagon statement has also confirmed that three U.S. soldiers had been killed in eastern Afghanistan and one wounded soldier had been evacuated for medical treatment.

Without giving further details, the statement said it was under investigation.

Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was carried out by an “infiltrator”.

The attack has taken place in an area where about two months ago, the U.S. military dropped its largest non-nuclear bomb also known as ‘Mother of All Bombs’ to target Daesh caves in the area.

On the same day, according to the sources, at least eight Afghan border police were killed and 16 more were injured in U.S. airstrikes in Nad Ali district of Helmand province.

The U.S. forces in Afghanistan confirmed the causalities of Afghan forces and called it an “unfortunate incident”.
