Taliban leader Mullah Mansoor likely killed in US drone strike
Afghan Taliban top leader Mullah Akhtar Mansoor has likely been killed in a U.S. drone strike along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, U.S. officials say.
Mansoor and his colleague were targeted as they rode in a vehicle near the town of Ahmad Wal in a remote area of Pakistan at around 15:00 hours on Saturday, the officials said.
The Pentagon has confirmed it targeted Taliban leader, but said they were still investigating the results of the operation.
“We are still assessing the results of the strike and will provide more information as it becomes available,” said Pentagon spokesperson Peter Cook.
The operation was authorised by President Barak Obama and both Pakistan and Afghanistan were informed about the strike shortly after it took place, the White House added.
On the condition of anonymity a Taliban commander has told the Reuters news agency that these reports are “baseless”.
Mullah Mansoor was officially became the leader of Taliban a day after the news about the death of their former leader Mullah Omar was disclosed.
