At least four Taliban gunmen have launched a coordinated attack at a money-exchange market in the center of Gereshk district in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province, officials said.

Provincial governor’s spokesman, Omar Zwak, said that the clashes were ongoing on Friday morning between the Afghan forces and the militants in the area.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The actual target might have been a small army center located nearby.

As a result of the ongoing fighting, the Kandahar – Herat highway was closed since Friday morning.

Late on Thursday, at least two soldiers and two intelligence personnel were killed and several wounded when a suicide bomber attacked a security checkpoint in the Gereshk district.

Gereshk district has been a center of fighting between Taliban and Afghan security forces for several weeks. A mistaken US airstrike on July 21 killed 16 people and wounded two Afghan security force members in the district.
