Taliban’s ex-leader son given senior military position

Taliban has given a senior military position to Mullah Omar’s son, the group announced on Monday.

Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob who is the elder son of the former Taliban supreme leader earlier refused to accept the leadership of his father successor Mullah Akhtar Mansoor.

According to the statement, Yaqoob will be in-charge of military commission in 15/34 provinces of Afghanistan and has been included in the Taliban’s top decision-making council along with his uncle Mullah Abdul Manan.

Bothe Yaqoob and Manan had assumed positions at a meeting of Taliban leadership council where senior commanders participated too, the statement added.

The announcement comes days after reports emerged that Mullah Omar’s family has declared their support for Mullah Akhtar Mansoor, the new Taliban leader.
