Top Generals Among 7 Arrested on Corruption Charges

The cases of seven Defense Ministry officials, including three senior generals have submitted to court on charges of corruption, embezzlement and misuse of authority.

The Attorney General says eight army officials have been arrested over embezzling more than $ 1,200,000 and forging documents.

“The detainees are under investigation and their cases have been submitted to the anti-corruption court,” said Jamshid Rasouli, spokesman of the General Attorney.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) rejected the existence of corruption in the ministry and emphasized on eradicating of this phenomenon.

“Corruption has not been fully eradicated and there are problems in some places, but our commitment is the elimination of this phenomenon,” said Muhammad Radmanish, spokesman of MoD.

President Ghani has committed to overcome corruption in the Ministry of Defense and said a campaign started to fight the endemic corruption in the ministry in order to curb the high casualty toll among security forces. However, the results are unknown so far.

The Defense Ministry has dismissed nearly 1,400 of its officials over alleged corruption over the past year.
