The United States President Donald Trump says he would bring the American troops home if a peace deal reached with the Taliban to end the 17 years of war in Afghanistan.

“For the first time they’re talking about settling, they’re talking about making an agreement, and we bring our people back home if that happens,” Trump told reporters in Oval Office late on Thursday.

“We’ll see what happens. But they’re in very serious negotiations for the first time. There’s a reason for that. So I think we’re doing so well on a foreign policy basis,” he said.

His remarks come amid U.S.-led diplomatic efforts to reach into a political settlement in Afghanistan.

The U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Ambassador Khalilzad earlier this week said that significant progress has been made on vital issues during the six-day talks with Taliban officials in Qatar.

The next round of talks between the U.S. and Taliban representatives is scheduled for 25th of February.
