Trump Speaks with Afghanistan’s President by Phone

The U.S. President-elect Donald Trump spoke by phone on Friday with the Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, it has been reported.

According to the Reuters news agency quoting the Trump transition team, the two sides discussed issues of bilateral interest, including the joint fight against terrorism.

“The two men discussed the grave terrorism threats facing both countries and pledged to work more closely together in order to meet these growing threats,” the Trump transition team said in a statement.

President Ghani called Kabul – Washington relation based on mutual and strategic interest of the two nations and wished the relations to be strengthened and expanded during Trump’s presidency, the Afghan Presidential palace said in a statement.

According to the statement, the Afghan president has called Washington as the fundamental partner of the people of Afghanistan for its joint role in the fight against terrorism.

During the call, Ghani has thanked the United State for its financial and technical support, calling it vital for the empowerment of the Afghanistan’s National Defense and Security Forces.

Trump has emphasized that his country will stand beside the people and government of Afghanistan, the statement added.

The two sides have also invited each other to make a visit to the United State and Afghanistan during a suitable opportunity.
