The security situation in Afghanistan will further deteriorate even with modest increase in U.S. military support and its partners in the country,  the top U.S. intelligence official said on Thursday.

The U.S. National Intelligence Director  Dan Coats said the security situation in Afghanistan will “almost certainly” continue to “deteriorate”  through 2018.

“The intelligence community assesses that the political and security situation in Afghanistan will almost certainly deteriorate through 2018, even with a modest increase in (the)military assistance by the United States and its partners,” Coast said, quoted by Reuters.

The Afghan Defense Ministry (MoD) confirmed the security situation likely to get worse in Afghanistan, reasoning Pakistan’s Intelligence Agency of backing the ongoing war in the country.

“We confirm that the conflict will escalate in the country because Pakistan’s Intelligence Agency is supporting the ongoing war, but it is impossible to the Taliban to take control of some parts in Afghanistan,” said the Defense Ministry Spokesman, Dawlat Waziri.

It comes as the United States and allies are expected to send more troops to Afghanistan that could be between 3,000 and 5,000 U.S. and coalition troops to the country.
