UN Welcomes National Unity Government
The United Nations has welcomed the agreement signed yesterday (Sunday) by the two presidential candidates, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, to establish a government of national unity as an important step to move the country towards a period of stability.
“The uncertainty of the past months has taken a heavy toll on Afghanistan’s security, economy and governance,” said the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Jan Kubis.
“For the sake of the country it is time to quickly implement the agreement on a government of national unity. The United Nations remains committed to supporting a new government in Afghanistan.”
The signing took place in a ceremony held in the Presidential Palace and was attended by President Hamid Karzai, cabinet members and civil society activists.
