US presidential candidate Donald Trump has said that if he is elected, he would keep the country’s troops in Afghanistan to protect Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal.

“I think you have to stay in Afghanistan for a while, because of the fact that you are right next to Pakistan, which has nuclear weapons and we have to protect that,” said Republican front-runner Trump while responding to a question during a presidential debate.

“Nuclear weapons change the game,” he added while explaining Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal necessitated the continued US military presence in Afghanistan.

Last year, Trump suggested involving India to de-nuclearise Pakistan.

These statements come as the main US mission in Afghanistan described in the Kabul – Washington bilateral pact is to train, advice and support Afghan security forces in the fight against the terrorists not to protect Pakistan’s nuclear arsenals.
