USAID announces scholarship for 900 females Afghan students

United State Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced of a five year education scholarships program for nearly 900 Afghan girls.

According to USAID, around 720 girls will be select complete undergraduate in private universities of Afghanistan and the another 180 girls will have mastery in Afghanistan neighboring countries.

US Charges’ d’affaires   in Kabul considers this program, the biggest program of women’s capacity building the American history and also announced of an extra assistance of $ 15 million to USAID for this program.

Afghan Chief Executive Officer, Abdullah Abdullah who was present in the opening ceremony of this program, emphasized that “Investment on education means investment on peace and development.”

Dr. Abdullah considered this program very important and essential opportunity for Afghan women and girls.

“Investment on education means investment on peace, luxury, stability, development and a comfortable life. I am waiting for the implementation of this program in next four and half years. The message of education and providing the opportunities is the message of lightening, while the message of terrorism which is a global challenge is the darkness,” said CEO, Abdullah Abdullah.

USAID’s commitment to Afghan women also includes the creation of an institute for gender and development studies and an international scholarship program for Afghan women pursuing careers in highly technical professions.

With substantial assistance from USAID, Afghanistan has seen one of the most rapid declines in maternal mortality anywhere in the world and an increase in overall life expectancy of 15 – 20 years.

Girls now account for more than a third of all school children in Afghanistan compared to virtually none in 2002. 

More than 120,000 young women have finished secondary school and 40,000 are working on university degrees. Women have entered the business and political arenas with women making up more than 25 percent of the Afghan parliament.
