World Bank Commits to Continue Long-Term Cooperation with Afghanistan

Chief Executive Officer, (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah met with Kyle Peters, senior vice president of the World Bank in Sepedar Palace on Saturday, Executive Office said in a press release.

The press release said Afghanistan has praised the World Bank’s efforts and cooperation in investment, assisting the private sector and the start of electricity generation program from gas in Balkh province.

CEO has urged the World Bank to pay serious attention on the problems of Afghan refugees returning to home.

The senior vice president of the World Bank, Kyle Peters has committed to address the problems and announced support for the regional programs, the press release added.

Currently, the World Bank is supposed to play a key role in implementation of CASA 1000 project; the Bank has allocated $ 800 million for the infrastructure parts of this project.

The World Bank is one of the main financiers of CASA-1000 project.

The $1.17 billion CASA-1000 project aims to supply electricity from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan via a 1,222-kilometer power transmission line. The goal is to supply 1,300 MW of electricity–excess summer generation in Central Asia–to South Asia. Crossroads Asia has published a number of articles critical of the project.

Recent political developments and the readiness of the government for Brussels Conference were also discussed in the meeting.
