Zalmay Khalilzad Under Consideration as New US Secretary of State

Kabul, Afghanistan—November 16, 2016—Former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Zalmay Mamozy Khalilzad, is among a small number of highly-experienced, senior Defense and Foreign Policy leaders under consideration by President-Elect Trump for the position of United States Secretary of State.

According to a recent report in The New York Times, Former Ambassador Khalilzad, Former Mayor of New York City Rudolph W. Giuliani, and former ISAF Commander, General Stanley McChrystal (Ret.), among others, are serious candidates for nomination as Secretary of State in the forthcoming Trump Administration.

Should former Ambassador Khalilzad be nominated as Secretary of State, he would become the first Muslim Secretary of State in the history of the United States.

Khalilzad served as US Ambassador to Afghanistan from 2003-2005. An Afghan-American, former Ambassador Khalilzad was born in Mazar-I-Sharif.
