The United States plans to provide more than $3 billion a year in support for the Afghan national security forces from 2018 through 2020, U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Olson said on Tuesday.

“We will provide in excess of three billion dollars per year through 2020, and we expect the United States will remain the largest single funder of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces,” Olson said.

Speaking at a think tank, Olson also said the United States planned to ask Congress for about $1 billion a year in development and economic assistance for Afghanistan from 2018 through 2020.

Currently, there are 9,800 U.S. troops in Afghanistan and there is a plan to reduce the number to 5,500 by the start of 2017 in four strategic locations in Kabul, Bagram, Jalalabad and Kandahar.

Afghan security forces includes the Afghan Armed Forces, Afghan National Police, Afghan Local Police and National Directorate of Security (NDS) that are fighting against the Taliban militants, Daesh and other terrorist groups across Afghanistan.
