AM General has been awarded a USD356 million contract to manufacture and deliver 1,673 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs) – also known as Humvees – to the US government for further delivery to the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police, the US-based company said in a statement on 1 August.

The contract calls on AM General to deliver 1,259 units of the M1151A1B1 and 414 units of the M1152A1B2 models.

Vehicle manufacturing will commence in August at the company’s military assembly plant in Mishawaka, Indiana, and is scheduled to be completed by 29 July, 2017.

In the meantime, Spokesman of Afghan defense ministry emphasized that fight with terrorists will be made easier with the help of the armored vehicles.

“We need further equipments in the current situation and US should equip Afghan National Army up to 2017. These aids will be more effective in elimination of terrorists,” said Muhammad Rad Minsh, Deputy Spokesman of the Defense Ministry.

The Afghan Parliament’s Internal Security Commission declared that the United States should provide further advanced weapons to Afghan troops according to the Security Agreement.

But, a number of military analysts urged the government to make further efforts in maintaining these weapons.

This comes as the terrorist groups have suffered heavy causalities in 20 big operations by Afghan security forces.
