EU urges NUG to take practical steps for electoral reforms before Brussels summit

European Union (EU) calls on National Unity Government (NUG) to take practical steps before the Brussels summit.

EU special envoy for Afghanistan in an interview with Ariananews stressed on reforming the electoral system; citing in Brussels summit, the world expect NUG leaders to present the electoral package for holding the upcoming elections.

“We expect the Afghan government to take the needed steps for electoral reforms that the upcoming elections to be transparent,” said Franz-Michael Mellbin, EU representative for Afghanistan.

Mellbin noted that the world will announce their support for Afghanistan up to the next four years in the Brussels summit.

“The Brussels summit will have a more comprehensive discussions on Afghanistan compared to the WARSAW summit, because the international community will announce support to Afghanistan for another four years,” Mellbin added.

On 5 October, the European Union and the government of Afghanistan will co-host the Brussels Conference on Afghanistan.

This conference will gather up to 70 countries and 30 international organizations and agencies.

It will provide a platform for the government of Afghanistan to set out its vision and track record on reform.

For the international community, it will be the opportunity to signal sustained political and financial support to Afghan peace, state-building and development.
